Introduction

The Alice Kyteler Festival is being organised by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, St Canice’s Cathedral and the Kytelers Inn, and will be a three-day event to mark the Alice Kyteler event.

The picturesque city of Kilkenny, Ireland, will host the Alice Kettler Festival from November 1–3, 2024, at famous historical sites including Kilkenny Castle, Kettler’s Inn, and St. Canice’s Cathedral. The festival, organised by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society in partnership with Local Heritage, celebrates and explores the fascinating history of Lady Alice Kittler, a figure shrouded in mystery and folklore.

In the 14th century, wealthy widow and moneylender Lady Alice Kittler became the first woman in Ireland to be accused of witchcraft. Her story is remarkable not only for the crimes she was accused of, but also for her dramatic escape from persecution, leaving behind a legacy that includes the tragic fate of her maid, Petronella de Meath, who was executed. The festival will commemorate the 700th anniversary of these historic events through a series of talks, discussions and events that delve into medieval Kilkenny, the phenomenon of witchcraft accusations, and the wider context of 14th century Irish and European history.

An opening reception at Kilkenny Castle, lectures by historians and academics, themed exhibitions, performances and more will be a key part of the celebrations. Highlights include a keynote speech on Kilkenny in 1324, a discussion on the involvement of the Knights Templar, and an exploration of medieval witchcraft and folklore. The event will also feature a memorial service for Petronilla de Mis, a solemn reflection on her life and death.
